“A hair transplant surgery is a very meticulous and intensive procedure. To achieve the best results of a successful surgery, you have to make all the decisions carefully and after a lot of consideration. You have to decide on the clinic and choose your surgeon after a lot of research. And you have to be realistic about the expectations of the surgery.”
This was stated by Dr. Gajanan Jadhao. He is one of the most esteemed Hair Transplant Surgeon in India, He is also an owner of one of the leading clinics of hair transplant in Pune namely La Densitae Hair Transplant Centre.
A successful hair transplant is one that has a natural-looking result and people who see you should not even realize that you got a hair transplant done. So while choosing a surgeon, choose someone who will answer all your doubts patiently and well and can give you the guarantee that they will do all the planning and execution so that your surgery is successful. India has also emerged out as a hub for hair transplant treatment. In all the major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.etc one can find a good number of best hair transplant surgeons.
To have a successful hair transplant surgery, all the steps from planning to execution and even post-surgery care have an extremely important role. So let’s discuss which factors are important for a successful surgery:
- The first and most important step is planning. Your surgeon must plan the surgery after carefully assessing the recipient and donor areas on your head. The surgeon also has to plan the design of your hairline in the recipient area well in advance. The surgeon has to keep in mind the degree of baldness and the availability of grafts while planning your surgery. You have limited grafts, and your surgeon has to do the implantation of the graft with this limited number. They have to prioritize the frontal areas of the head. The density of the implants can reduce as you go towards the back of the head. This improves the visual density. These were the steps that your surgeon has to plan concerning the recipient area, which is where the hair will be transplanted.
- Next, the doctor will do the donor area planning. Your surgeon needs to assess the safe donor area and then calculate the donor density. This means that the surgeon needs to determine how many grafts can be taken from the donor area. And if the bald area is large or there are multiple bald patches then the surgeon will have to prioritize the limited grafts accordingly and plan this much.
- The next important step is execution. During execution, your surgeon will have to set up the whole OT and maintain the highest hygiene standards so that there are no complications during the surgery and the grafts will survive. Apart from this, the surgical instruments have to be of excellent quality. The surgeon’s skill and experience are also essential during graft extraction. This will ensure that the grafts have minimum transaction and won’t be damaged. During the execution of surgery, after your doctor extracts grafts, the storage should be of minimal duration to prevent the grafts from drying and getting dehydrated. The grafts have to be stored by the correct medical standards and requirements. They have to be kept in saline, ringer lactate hypothermal, or the patient’s plasma, at around 5-10 degrees.
- The next important step is the planting of the grafts on the recipient area. The surgeon has to keep the recipient area ready by making slits or holes. This will ensure that the surgeon will be able to implant the grafts to give the best density and give the best results of the surgery. Another important thing to keep in mind while planting the grafts is that the surgeon has to handle the grafts very carefully. Each graft is an individual life structure and is very delicate.
During the surgery, if the graft is held by its root, it will get permanently damaged. In this technique, doctors do not touch the graft at the root at any point during the surgery. As we have already discussed, the grafts won’t survive outside the body for too long. According to a few studies, the graft survival rate is almost 95% if implanted within three hours of removal from the donor area. And post this the survival rate declines. So to minimize the grafts “out of body time”, surgeons conduct the surgery in short sessions.
Post Surgery: Above mentioned were all the important steps to be followed before and during the surgery. But even after the surgery, the patient has to take proper care of their scalp and follow all the aftercare instructions given by the surgeon. Keeping the scalp wet, not doing any strenuous exercise, washing your scalp gently only after the surgeon recommends it, and contacting your surgeon immediately if you experience any unusual pain, redness, swelling, or infection. If you take these precautions, your recovery will be good and your grafts won’t fall out or get spoilt and the new hair will grow well.
There are several small but important steps to take while doing a hair transplant to make it a success. There are no steps that are less or more important and all are equally important. A lapse in any step may affect the success of the surgery. Just extracting and implanting grafts and their growing is not a successful hair transplant surgery. Talk with your doctor about these risks and how much improvement you’re likely to get from the surgery. He can help you decide if it’s a good option for you.
